Friars at Finchale (Finkle)

This just has to be one of the most picturesque settings for a campsite. My unit was parked right against the railings that protected the 20’ sheer drop into the footings of the old Priory.

Under the care of English Heritage it is an amazing ruin, the height of the remaining walls showing what an impressively amazing building it must have been in its heyday.

I arrived early taking a few days holidays before the Rally proper, and having been delayed leaving home, was absolutely delighted to find Norman and Marj had beaten me to it !  The usual welcome Dandy cuppa appeared as if by magic and I was as snug as the proverbial just as a heavy shower passed overhead to remind me that it did rain now and again in this country.

During the week I kept myself busy, visiting a friend in Darlington, a day – while the tide was in – at Holy Island.  Very peaceful although there were an amazing number of people left on the island.  Found a nice pub, which was fully booked for the evening meals, but one of the advantages of being on your own, is you can often sneak in and get served when they would refuse a party!

Friday was spent lazing on the site, examining the Priory at close quarters, and watching the stewards welcome all the Rally goers to the site. 18 units stayed the two nights of the Rally.

Saturday, after a short committee meeting, I spent the afternoon in Durham.  I can thoroughly recommend the Cathedral Restaurant, and also a little café tucked away up an alley by the side of Waterstones, called Veeny’s or something very similar.

A very pleasant evening was enjoyed by the majority of the members chatting sitting between Stephen/Claire’s and Brian/Bubble’s Dandys.  All too soon it was Sunday morning, Rally meet, Raffle, and Goodbyes. At least we know that we will be meeting within three weeks at Poulton, well a good number of us well be. As for me I stayed on an extra night literally strolling home in the sunshine having spent a lovely evening in the local pub enjoying a meal with a 2 for 1 offer with the occupants of the other unit left on site. Thanks Derek and Marjorie for the help folding up on Monday morning, much appreciated.

In the meantime, Happy Dandying if you are elsewhere. Make the most of the weather, while we have it.

Viv Rathbone.
