Our First Rally our first time in a Dandy.

It was the weekend certain horse race and the going was soft to sodden…… Sleet, icy winds, weather a Dandy was designed for……

Well we learnt quite a bit this weekend.  For a start when pitching a Dandy in the wind, there is a very good reason for putting the end into the wind unless you want to get clobbered by a hoop. A practical demo of hoop clobbering does illustrate the point so much better than the instructions!  ‘Keep going’ Viv ordered… we kept going … thanks Viv …you were right it did go up.

It is also surprisingly easy to get stuck in a boggy field we found… and mud does spray interesting patterns onto the poor devils that are shoving you out.. Thanks guys. (Maybe new ideas for the Tate??!)

Not tying down the roof properly is not to be recommended in sleet and gale conditions as it lends itself to much more ventilation than is desirable and a lot of flapping during the night. Lessons given by Alan and Sue the next day in the finer points of roof fastening and the next night was very snug.

There were achievements too.  I did not blow up the Dandy using the gas… thanks to whoever it was who showed me how to switch on the gas. I learnt to change the cylinder.  We worked out how the whale pump fitted and the electrics and we did not trip the campsite electrics.  Thanks for the electric instructions that you stuck in the campsite pack, we were the ignorant ones for which it was useful. More importantly we had a great time and even managed a trip up the Blackpool tower, something that proved to be much more interesting that I had predicted.

I have to say was a bit worried about managing that on the final day but we need not have worried people appeared from nowhere to pack up the unit.  Everybody was so friendly and helpful. Thanks in particular to Val, Dave and Rita for such a well organised meet, the biscuits after a long drive were wonderful.

Thank you all for being so helpful and for asking us back… I am now an official Dandy anorak and my offspring pretend that I am not related.
